Job Description

Roberts Memorial United Methodist Church Alexandria, VA JOB DESCRIPTION AND EXPECTATIONS OF MUSIC DIRECTOR The Music Director will provide leadership, in conjunction with the Pastor and Worship Team, in the area of the church’s ministry of music and accompany on piano and/or organ for services. Leadership includes, but is not limited to, accompanying the congregational singing, offering anthems, service music, and directing and rehearsing the choir(s) of the congregation. The Music Director will work with the Pastor and Worship Team in providing dynamic and diverse worship experiences for those in attendance. The Music Director will select songs and other worship music that compliments the worship/preaching plans, the Pastor sets as the theme of the worship. The Music Director will encourage and enable broad participation in the church’s ministry of music; i.e. Choir(s) adult, children, small ensembles, solos, duets, instrumentals etc. The Music Director will help all choirs & musicians rehearse all music in advance of the worship services in which the music will be used. The Music Director will select, in coordination with the Pastor and the Worship Team, seasonal, musical programs which include but are not limited to Christmas Eve, Christmas, Ash Wednesday, Lent, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter, Thanksgiving, and Vacation Bible School. The Music Director will provide guidance to the church relative to the purchase of equipment, materials, and supplies related to the ministry of music. Expenditures in this area shall not exceed the amount provided for in the church budget and/or special music funds. The Music Director will maintain the music library in an orderly fashion and provide, at Roberts Memorial UMC expense, a suitable number of copies of material as needed for choirs and other musicians. The Music Director will cooperate with the Pastor and the Worship Team in the area of general planning and leadership of the church’s program. The Music Director shall have the right of first refusal for all weddings and funerals requiring organ and/or piano music held within the church. The fee shall be negotiated between the requesting parties and the Music Director. If the Music Director is unable to perform for these services, the Music Director will give approval or disapproval of the substitute musician(s). The Music Director shall be directly responsible to the Pastor.
