Job Description

Director of Music Rock Spring Congregational United Church of Christ (RSUCC) in Arlington, Virginia, seeks a music director to lead our robust music program. Church Profile - Read our church profile: https://bit.ly/RSUCCProfile Position Responsibilities ● Oversees and administers the entire music program at RSUCC, setting goals and developing the program. ● Leads planning, selection, and organization of music for worship services, in consultation with church staff. ● Rehearses and directs the adult choir, handbell choir, children’s choir, and other ensembles for worship services. ● Supervises assistant music director/organist. ● Leads congregational engagement in music programs, to include recruiting singers and instrumentalists for music programs. ● Responsible for overseeing musicians engaged to perform at the church. ● Arranges for coverage/identifies subs if absent. Maintains a roster of musicians available to fill in. ● Develops and manages the annual music budget in consultation with the music committee. ● Identifies and maintains necessary copyright licenses for the music program. ● Develops, adds to, and maintains the church's music library. ● Stays current on trends and resources in church music. ● Supervises maintenance of the church's organ, pianos, bells, instruments, and other music equipment. ● Participates in staff, music committee, and worship planning meetings. Attends annual church meeting. ● Collaborates with the church administrator to provide information on music for the worship bulletin and other communications. ● May occasionally provide accompaniment for music groups during worship service or perform individually. ● Works on committees, special projects as assigned. ● Cooperates with external music programs occasionally. Qualifications ● Bachelor’s degree in a music-related discipline or other significant musical training required ● Experience conducting vocal and instrumental ensembles ● Knowledge of and experience with sacred music ● Experience working with children and youth ● Demonstrable familiarity with other musical genres ● Strong piano skills ● Familiarity with organ and its use in worship ● Familiarity with office management software, social media desirable ● Familiarity with digital music software, such as forScore, etc. ● Familiarity with A/V tech desirable Core Competencies ● Enthusiastic ambassador for the music program ● Welcoming, inclusive, and affirming ● Communicates clearly and effectively (verbal, written) ● Organized, strong planning and problem-solving skills ● Collaborative and flexible ● Coach and teacher for music program participants ● Values aligned with Rock Spring UCC core beliefs Compensation and Benefits ● This is a part-time, salaried position requiring 30 hours a week including music ensemble rehearsals and worship services. Hours are flexible outside standing responsibilities. ● Salary Range: $69,000-74,000 ● Honoraria for weddings and memorial services, consistent with church policy. ● Professional development support. ● Use of church facilities for offering private lessons. Priority Tasks for the Director of Music 1 ) Build and further develop RSUCC’s high-quality music program and broaden participation, highlighting talents within the congregation and engaging all members of the congregation into the music program regardless of their musical ability. 2) Expand the music program into new areas, with a focus on exposing the congregation to a diversity of musical styles and sources in worship and other settings while continuing to reflect Rock Spring’s values. 3) Expand the list of support musicians for church, including talented, professional musicians for special programs; integrate music into outreach of church by creating experiences that will draw community to Rock Spring.
