Job Title: Director of Traditional Music Location: Middlebrook Pike United Methodist Church Hours: Part-Time, 18 hours per week Job Summary: Middlebrook Pike United Methodist Church seeks a passionate and skilled Director of Traditional Music to lead and develop our traditional worship choir and adult handbell ensemble. The ideal candidate will have a deep appreciation for traditional Christian worship music, strong leadership abilities, and a commitment to enhancing the worship experience through music. The Director of Traditional Music will assist MPUMC in teaching and spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ and traditional Wesleyan and United Methodist doctrine to members and other attendees by leading the congregation in praise of God through both congregational singing and music by the choir. This includes coordinating special vocal and/or instrumental performances and aligning music with the seasons of the church calendar (Christmas, Easter, Pentecost, etc.) and the messages or sermon series presented by the pastor. Responsibilities: • Choir Leadership: Direct and lead the choir in rehearsals and performances, ensuring a high standard of musical excellence. • Handbell Ensemble Leadership: Direct and lead the adult handbell ensemble, conducting rehearsals and performances. • Worship Services: Plan and coordinate music for traditional worship services, including selecting hymns, anthems, handbell pieces, and other musical elements in collaboration with the worship planning team. Align music with the seasons of the church calendar and the sermon series. • Rehearsals: Conduct weekly choir and handbell rehearsals, preparing both groups for Sunday services, special events, and holidays. • Music Selection: Choose appropriate music that enhances the worship experience and supports the liturgical calendar and the pastor’s message. • Musical Development: Foster a positive and encouraging environment for choir and handbell members, providing guidance and support to help them develop their musical abilities. • Administrative Duties: • Work with volunteers to maintain the choir and handbell music libraries, manage communications, and coordinate with church staff and volunteers. • Oversee the Children’s Music Director and Organist, ensuring alignment with the overall music ministry. • Report directly to the Lead Pastor. • Community Engagement: Encourage congregation participation in the choir and handbell ensemble, and promote their roles within the church community. • Special Services: Plan and lead music for special services such as Christmas, Easter, and other significant church events. Prepare the choir, praise band, and any special performances for each service. • Other Duties as Assigned: Perform other tasks and responsibilities as assigned by the Lead Pastor or church leadership to support the overall mission and goals of the church. Qualifications: • Education: • Bachelor’s degree in Music, Music Education, or a related field preferred. • Experience: • Proven experience in directing choirs and handbell ensembles, particularly within a church setting. • Familiarity with traditional Christian worship music is essential. • Skills: • Strong conducting and rehearsal techniques. • Proficiency in vocal, choral, and handbell techniques. • Excellent organizational and communication skills. • Ability to work collaboratively with church staff, volunteers, and the congregation. • Personal Attributes: • A strong Christian faith and commitment to the mission and values of Middlebrook Pike United Methodist Church. • A passion for music ministry and a heart for worship. • A positive and encouraging attitude, with the ability to inspire and motivate choir and handbell members.
